Independence Day 2020: India achieved its independence after years of being ruled by the British and indeed after a lot of struggle. This year, India will celebrate its 74th Independence Day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the national flag at Red Fort and will address the nation. Tricolor or Tiranga is the national flag and was an integral part of the Indian freedom movement.

Jana Gana Mana, the national anthem was also important for the freedom fighters. The national anthem was originally composed in Bengali by Ravindranath Tagore. The national anthem represents the unity for the entire nation, India.

Some Facts about Tiranga

  • The National Flag is a horizontal, rectangular Tricolor of saffron, white and green with the Ashoka Chakra (blue) in the middle.
  • On August 15, 1947, the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the national flag at Red Fort.
  • In the middle of the white stripe there is a Spinning Wheel.
  • The design of the tricolor is largely attributed to Pingali Venkayya, an Indian freedom fighter who reportedly first met Mahatma Gandhi in South Africa during the second Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902).
